I am the highway

Friends and liars don't wait for me,
'cause I'll get on all by myself,
I put millions of miles under my heels,
and still too close to you I feel.

Profound words from the song 'I am the highway' by the American band Audioslave. One of my favorite songs from this band, the music really pulls you into a totally different realm of consciousness. Have a look at the lyrics  of this song and also watch the youtube video which has been taken from the 2007 movie, Into the Wild. This film details the journey of the lead protagonist, Christopher McCandless across North America and the wilderness of Alaska.

In the film and the video as well, McCandless is a person who has become tired of the conventional ways of life and feels corrupted by modern civilization. So, he decides to leave, destroying all of his credit cards and identification documents and also donates his entire savings. Now, think about our own lives, how many times have we felt the pressure on us? The pressure of work life, of responsibilities, of routine work and monotony. This is a story which details the problems people are facing nowadays in this world of cut-throat competition and frail nerves as well as body.

So, how to avoid stress? The solutions to these problems does not necessarily have to be similar in nature to the one's adopted by the protagonist in the video. What one has to ensure is that one should know the breaking point of one's stress bearing capacity and according to that, plan and execute steps to take a break when such a situation arises. All it takes is just taking a step back from the present situation and looking at it from a different perspective. One of the solutions which I had offered previously was to stop living life like a zombie. Another very simple solution could be a spiritual trip which changes your perspective and your location. It might just turn out to be the path which leads you to self-realization.

However, just like Christopher McCandless, even we too must realize that true happiness can only be found when shared with others.

True happiness can only be found when shared with others

  1. It's all in the mind. The best way to deal with work related stress is to take your mind away from the consequence or end-result, and focus on the process.

  7. Very very well said Jay. I totally agree. One needs to experience the joy of sharing happiness with others in order to appreciate it. Till one does so, its tough. A daily activity that one does with a lot of liking is a definite stress buster. May be a walk, may be music, may be sports...anything!

  9. Looks like a movie to watch. Well, I believe in keeping things simple and I am gifted in a way that I can detach myself very easily. If something bothers me, I sit and ask myself, 'Does it deserve all the time and pain?' If not, then I move on. For me, things have to be simple. Having said that, I think life teaches you the value of time. And generally we all are stressed out and we need a good and profound read like this. I agree we have to share things with others, happiness but not that much of sorrows...

Keep on writing about good things. Your blogs are interesting and thought provoking!
